DAF and VDL group: partners for electric CF Truck

DAF was one of the first truck manufacturers to introduce a hybrid-electric distribution truck in Europe and has continued to develop hybrid of hybrid and electric powertrains

DAF Trucks and VDL work closely together to deploy a first series of CF Electric-trucks to leading transport companies during the year. The vehicles are equipped with state-of-the-art VDL E-Power Technology and therefore run emission-free and virtually silent. These first field test vehicles are produced by DAF and the fully electrical installation is completed at VDL Group. The two companies show their strong cooperation in the field of electrification of commercial vehicles.

Technologies where the customer comes first

“DAF has a strong reputation when it comes to developing innovative solutions that meet the ever-changing needs of its customers”, said Preston Feight, CEO of DAF Trucks. “And of course we will continue to provide them with all the necessary technologies to make them successful. DAF was one of the first truck manufacturers to introduce a hybrid-electric distribution truck in Europe and has continued to develop hybrid of hybrid and electric powertrains. More and more cities express the intention to only allow emission-free and virtually silent vehicles. We will make sure that our customers have the best solutions they need.”

VDL Group: leading in the electrification of commercial vehicles

For the CF Electric, DAF cooperates with VDL Group, also from Eindhoven. VDL is a technologically leading company with considerable experience in the field of electrification of commercial vehicles, especially in buses for public transport. “VDL has proven to be leading in the field of fully electric buses for public transport. We have now supplied hundreds of electric buses to public transport companies throughout Europe”, said Willem van der Leegte, director of VDL Group. “The collaboration with DAF for this electric truck is a fantastic development and is a great opportunity for two in Eindhoven based technology companies to lead the way in the field of electrically driven commercial vehicles.”

Emission-free driving in urban distribution

The CF Electric is a 4×2 tractor unit, developed for distribution traffic up to 40 tons in urban areas, where single or double axle trailers are the standard. The vehicle is based on the DAF CF – the ‘International Truck of the Year 2018’ – and uses VDL’s E-Power Technology for fully electric traction. The heart of this intelligent powertrain is made up of an electric motor of 210 kW, which is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack with a present total capacity of 170 kWh. The CF Electric has a range of approximately 100 kilometers, making it suitable for transporting high volumes within urban distribution areas. Fast charging of the batteries can be done in 30 minutes and it can be fully charged in just an hour and a half.
