BYD and CATL plan to release advanced EV-Batteries, capable of a 6C charge rate.
BYD and CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd) reportedly aim to introduce a new EV-
Battery with a 6C charge rate.
CATL & BYD new 6C EV-Batteries will ‘SUPERCHARGE’ The EV- Industry!
A battery’s C rating measures the rate at which it can be charged or discharged. According to Car News China, the charge rate indicates how many times a battery can fully charge within an hour. With a 6C charge rate, a battery could theoretically charge six times in an hour. Local Chinese media report that CATL and BYD are set to debut new batteries capable of charging 100% in about 10 minutes.
CATL’s 6C Battery
CATL, a global leader in battery technology, introduced the Shenxing battery with a 5C charge rate in an EV earlier this year. The Zeekr 001, featuring CATL’s Shenxing battery, entered the Chinese market, boasting a charging capability from 10% to 80% in just 11.5 minutes. According to the CLTC standard, the Zeekr 001 offers a range of 472 km.
CATL is reportedly planning to launch a new Qilin battery in the second half of 2024. This battery will utilize nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry and is expected to achieve a 6C charge rate.
BYD’s 6C Battery
BYD is reportedly set to launch its second-generation Blade Battery around the same time CATL releases its new Qilin battery.
The new Blade Battery is anticipated to offer greater range and lower costs for BYD’s electric vehicles. Since battery costs significantly influence an EV’s final purchase price, the new Blade Battery is particularly noteworthy.
Recently, the United States and the European Union have increased tariffs on Chinese EV imports to protect their local electric vehicle markets. However, advanced batteries like CATL’s Qilin battery and BYD’s Blade Battery might undermine the intended effects of these tariffs, especially in Europe.
