EU maintains 2035 deadline for ban on petrol cars.

There’s no way back : ‘Electric Mobility’ is a fact’!

The European Union remains “firmly committed to its controversial plans” to restrict combustion engines starting in 2035, despite heavy pressure from the car industry to soften the upcoming rules, according to the Financial Times.

The newspaper reports that it has “seen answers prepared for the EU’s climate chief, Wopke Hoekstra, ahead of his parliamentary hearings next month,” which state that the EU “cannot and will not abandon” its plan to ban the sale of new cars powered by fossil fuels.

The law, announced in 2021, “has faced criticism from European car manufacturers who are struggling with declining electric vehicle sales and intense competition from Chinese manufacturers,” the paper explains.

Nevertheless, the briefing notes that the new rules provide “certainty for investors and manufacturers” and are crucial for achieving the EU’s CO2 reduction targets, as well as for “strengthening the competitiveness of the European automotive industry.”
