Mercedes-Benz confirms S-Class EV to replace underperforming EQS Sedan

Mercedes-Benz will electrify its S-Class luxury sedan

Mercedes-Benz will electrify its luxury sedan lineup further with the next-generation S-Class, which has been confirmed to include an electric variant by CEO Ola Källenius. That new model is supposed to replace the slow-selling EQS sedan, a change that marks an about-face for Mercedes.

For the Twin-Powertrain approach

There will be two main drivetrain options for the new-gen S-Class- a regular internal combustion engine (ICE) and an all-electric choice. The strategy is quite similar to the one employed by BMW with its recent 5 and 7 Series models, as it seeks to attract buyers of both electrified versions of these vehicles as well as their conventional counterparts.

Different ICE and Electric Version

Design-wise, the electric S-Class is expected to share a few things with its ICE sibling but it will be underpinned by an entirely different platform. The electric powertrain is also to be used in Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming MB. This big scalable architecture is designed solely to house electric motors. The ICE variant original will also remain in the pipeline, albeit based on an updated version of today’s MRA platform.

Rethinking the EQS Sedan

The latter move excises the EQS sedan due to sluggish sales. That model, originally intended to be the flagship in Mercedes-Benz’s EQ range of electric vehicles, failed to set buyer intentions ablaze and convinced Benz execs that a more iconic nameplate — like S-Class — would work better.

The road ahead for Mercedes-Benz

An S-Class, which is expected to follow by 2030 with both ICE and electric versions. Come 2017, Mercedes-Benz wants electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to make up at least one in every two cars it sells worldwide. This change further illustrates the brand’s dedication to innovation with a continued foothold in the luxury automobile space.

Conclusion
In a time where electrification of the car manufacturer landscape has been nearly non-stop, having Mercedes-Benz on board is somewhat huge. With its legendary S-Class brand, it has a unique name unlike few others; Mercedes will be ideally positioned to lead the market in both luxury and electric.
