Protean Electric motor delivers 1,500 Nm – per wheel

Protean Electric introduces its fifth-generation wheel hub motor: the Pd18 IWM Gen 5. With impressive performance data and versatile applications, this model sets new standards.

As part of its rigorous validation process, Protean Electric motor has tested over 80 units of its Pd18 Gen5 wheel motor through 64 comprehensive test programs. The results reveal that the Pd18 Gen5 achieves an impressive peak torque of 1,500 Nm, setting a new industry benchmark for in-wheel motor (IWM) performance. This advanced motor is designed to fit into an 18-inch wheel with an integrated inverter, positioning it as a leading solution for mainstream automotive applications.

Engineered for durability, the Pd18 Gen5 is expected to last up to 15 years and cover 300,000 kilometers. Protean has meticulously accounted for all potential challenges, such as impacts from potholes and exposure to harsh environmental conditions, ensuring the motor’s robustness and reliability.

Similar to the early electric vehicles, a comprehensive framework for testing and validation is essential. Our team has heavily invested in refining our testing and validation processes to guarantee that the fifth-generation wheel motor withstands extreme impacts, vibrations, thermal cycles, sand, dust, water, and chemical contaminants, all while ensuring long-term durability.”

The Pd18 Gen5 is manufactured at Protean’s facility in Tianjin, China. The company is already in discussions with a range of automakers and aftermarket suppliers and is ready to scale up production as demand increases. Additionally, Protean is developing various product variants, including options with both integrated and separate inverters. A 400-volt version is currently available, with an 800-volt variant scheduled for release by the end of 2024.
