Valeo and Mahle team up on electric axle

Valeo and Mahle are now partners in the research and innovation for a very advanced
magnet-free electric axle system for high-performance upper segment electric vehicles. This
collaboration, the coming together of these two, is doing great things for dissemination of
performance and efficiency, targeting power ranges between 220 kW and 350 kW.

Joint development agreement

The two companies Valeo and Mahle came together to sign up a Joint Development
Agreement leaning altogether on an innovative approach to fire up these two technologies
with one another. Furthermore this partnership most likely will make a new stage in electric-
drive systems for the very high performance vehicles.

Introducing the iBEE system

An entirely new system called iBEE, which stands for inner Brushless Electrical Excitation,
will change the game for magnetless electric motors forever. It has state-of-the-art
technology: a special focus on performance enhancement without harm to the environment-
really a leap forward for automobiles.

Environmental benefits

Clearly, one of the biggest advantages of the iBEE system is its ability to lower carbon
emissions by up to 40% as compared to ordinary permanent magnet electric motors. This
reduction tally with the global advances toward sustainability and positions Valeo and Mahle
as leaders in offering eco-friendly automotive solutions.

Prototype testing timeline

Prototype-1 testing to be completed by the end of 2024, indicating the swift descent of the
two companies into development and commercialization of this new technology, aimed at
having their work ready in time when it is already applicable for the quickly developing
market of electric vehicles.

Previous successes

Valeo’s previous experience with Externally Excited Synchronous Motor (EESM) technology
provides a much stronger enabler for this. It has previously collaborated with a European
OEM, yielding as much as 30% increase in power density while compromising significant
carbon footprint.
Industry leaders unite
According to Xavier Dupont, CEO of Valeo Power, this partnership allows both companies to
probe the boundary of innovation in e-motors; while Martin Wellhoeffer of Mahle said their
combined expertise should set new standards of efficiency and performance in e-axles.

Focus on sustainability

In electrification, Mahle has improved systems for developing sustainable electric drive
systems. Their contactless transmitter technology also demonstrates a commitment to
scaling down rare earth materials, thus reducing environmental footprints while contributing
to resource security.

Conclusion
Valeo and Mahle have formed such an extraordinary partnership in the electric vehicle story.
With the iBEE system, both companies are ushering in the future for more efficient and
sustainable transport solutions. As they prepare for prototype testing, the anticipation is
great from the automotive sector on how this partnership will affect mobility in the future.
