  • Volkswagen’s PowerCo aims to produce up to 80 gigawatt-hours of solid-state cells annually.
  • QuantumScape and PowerCo are collaborating to ramp up production.
  • Specific details regarding production timeline and location have not been disclosed.

Volkswagen’s PowerCo and QuantumScape have announced plans to accelerate the mass production of solid-state lithium-metal batteries for electric vehicles. Under a non-exclusive licensing agreement. PowerCo will produce up to 40 gigawatt-hours of battery cells annually using QuantumScape’s technology, with potential expansion to 80 gigawatt-hours—sufficient to power one million EV’s each year. This partnership aims to industrialize cutting-edge battery technology, enhancing the performance and efficiency of electric vehicles.

Scaling QuantumScape’s Solid-State Tech with Volkswagen

QuantumScape’s solid-state technology utilizes ceramic separators to enable a pure lithium-metal anode, resulting in enhanced energy and power density as well as faster charging capabilities. While solid-state battery technology has demonstrated validity in laboratory and small-scale environments, scaling up for mass production and long-term use in vehicles has presented significant challenges.

Volkswagen’s first EV Cell Gigafactory begins construction

Volkswagen initiated construction of its inaugural EV cell “gigafactory” in July 2022, coinciding with the establishment of the PowerCo business unit to oversee operations. Located in Salzgitter, Germany, the facility marks a pivotal hub for VW’s global battery initiatives. This initiative kickstarts VW’s “global battery offensive,” focusing on localized battery production by market and a vertically integrated supply chain to reduce cell costs by 50%.
