The UK has one of Europe's fastest-growing EV charging networks with over 60,000 public charge points. Whether you need a home charger, a city charging card, or rapid charging on the motorway — EVTrader advises you free of charge on the best setup for your driving.
Charging methods
How and where to charge your electric car
Home charging (7kW wallbox)
A 7kW home charger (tethered or socketed, Type 2) is the most cost-effective way to charge. Top up overnight and leave with a full battery every morning. A qualified OZEV-approved installer handles the setup; grants for home charging have changed — ask us for the current position.
Public AC charging
Thousands of 7kW and 22kW Type 2 charge points in car parks, supermarkets and on-street across the UK. Charge while you shop or work. Access via app, RFID card or contactless payment — requirements vary by network.
Rapid & ultra-rapid DC charging
Motorway service areas and major routes have 50–350kW DC rapid chargers (CCS2). Under 30 minutes to add 100–200 miles of range. BP Pulse, Gridserve and IONITY give the best coverage on the motorway network.

Frequently asked questions about EV charging in the UK

A home charger is not strictly required — a standard 3-pin socket will charge a typical EV, but slowly (30+ hours for a full charge). A 7kW wallbox from an OZEV-approved installer charges most cars overnight and is far more practical.
The OZEV Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant was closed to homeowners in 2022 but remains available for flats, rental properties, and workplaces. Rules change; ask us for the current position before booking an installer.
Gridserve and BP Pulse give the widest motorway coverage. IONITY covers the major European-corridor routes. Downloading the Zap-Map app lets you plan any journey and filter by network, speed, and connector type.
