In short: PCH, PCP or HP

PCH: fixed monthly payments, no ownership, usually the lowest cost — the go-to for drivers who want a new car every few years. PCP: lower deposit-based payments with an optional balloon payment to own the car later. HP: you own the car from day one once the final instalment is paid, no mileage limit, but you carry the resale risk. Updated 2026-07-06.

The monthly payment comes down to residual value

On both PCH and PCP, the monthly payment = (vehicle price − predicted residual value) ÷ term, plus interest and fees. Two quotes on the same model can differ by tens of pounds a month simply because lenders estimate the residual value differently.

That's exactly where EVTrader adds value: we compare offers from multiple lenders using real residual-value data, and negotiate the monthly payment on your behalf.

PCH (Personal Contract Hire) is a pure lease: you pay fixed monthly instalments and hand the car back at the end — there's no option to buy. PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) adds a deposit plus lower monthly payments (covering depreciation only) and an optional final 'balloon' payment if you want to own the car at the end. Updated 2026-07-06.
PCH suits drivers who want the lowest monthly cost and always want to be driving a newer car, with no interest in ownership. PCP suits those who want the option to buy later — useful if the model tends to hold its value well. Hire Purchase (HP) suits high-mileage drivers who want to own the car outright with no mileage limit.
You hand the car back. Excess mileage and any damage beyond fair wear and tear are charged according to the contract. You then move on to a new lease — EVTrader re-quotes the market at each renewal.
You choose: pay the pre-agreed 'balloon' payment to own the car, hand it back with nothing more to pay (subject to mileage/condition), or trade in any positive equity towards a new PCP deal.
Yes, though the used-car offer is more limited than on new cars. The monthly payment depends on price, battery State of Health (SoH) and term. EVTrader checks SoH before quoting a used-EV finance offer.
