Ford Recalls 42,784 Mustang Mach-E EVs Over Rear Differential Shaft That May Fracture

Ford has issued a safety recall covering 42,784 model-year 2021 to 2023 Mustang Mach-E electric crossovers in the United States after identifying that the rear differential pinion shaft in rear-wheel-drive variants may bend, fracture or break, potentially causing loss of drive power or unexpected movement while in Park.

Ford issued a safety recall on 7 July 2026 covering 42,784 Mustang Mach-E electric crossovers from model years 2021 to 2023 in the United States. The defect involves the rear differential pinion shaft fitted to rear-wheel-drive variants. The shaft may bend, fracture or break, leading to a sudden loss of drive power while the vehicle is in motion. In vehicles where the parking brake is not engaged, a broken shaft may also allow the vehicle to move unexpectedly while in the Park position. A malfunction indicator light on the instrument panel may appear as an additional symptom.

Ford stated that the root cause of the pinion shaft failure remained under investigation at the time of the recall announcement. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on 13 July 2026, informing owners of the risk. A permanent remedy — replacement of the rear differential assembly — is expected to be available at authorised dealers from late December 2026; all repairs will be carried out at no charge to the owner. The recall was also reported by electrive on 9 July 2026.

The recall does not affect the Mach-E's high-voltage battery, charging system or onboard software.
