Battery-Electric Cars Outsell Every Other Powertrain in Germany for the First Time in June

Battery-electric vehicles became Germany's best-selling powertrain for the first time in June 2026, with 84,057 new registrations representing a 78.2% year-on-year increase and a 28.4% share of the total market. The result narrowly edged out conventional hybrid vehicles, which recorded 83,315 new registrations in the month — a lead of just 742 units for BEVs. By comparison, petrol cars registered 60,796 units, diesel 33,862, and plug-in hybrids 32,212. The milestone carries particular symbolic weight given that Germany is the birthplace of the automobile and has historically been one of the more cautious large European markets in embracing battery-electric vehicles. Tesla posted the standout individual result, with registrations up 317.6% year-on-year in June, reflecting both a very low comparable base in June 2025 and strong demand for the refreshed Model Y. Through the first half of 2026, BEV registrations in Germany were up approximately 48% year-to-date, reaching roughly 368,000 units — indicating that June's record was part of a sustained acceleration rather than a one-off peak. The overall German new-car market also strengthened significantly in June, providing a broad tailwind for the BEV segment's historic first-place finish.
