Home charging in the UK: wallbox, installation and costs

For most UK drivers, home charging is the foundation of EV ownership. A standard 3-pin socket will charge a car overnight at around 3 kW, but a dedicated 7 kW wallbox is the practical choice for daily use.

Wallbox installation

A 7 kW home wallbox requires a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit. Installation typically takes half a day and must be carried out by an OZEV-approved installer. Costs vary — budget around £700–£1,100 all-in for a mid-range smart wallbox installed, though prices shift with equipment and installer. The key is choosing a smart charger: it communicates with your car and can shift charging to off-peak tariff windows automatically.

Off-peak tariffs

Several UK energy tariffs offer much cheaper overnight electricity rates specifically for EV drivers. Charging overnight on a time-of-use tariff can cut your energy cost per mile significantly compared to paying peak rates. Over a year of typical driving, the saving can run to hundreds of pounds compared with petrol costs.

Flats and rented properties

Installing a wallbox in a flat or rented home requires landlord or managing agent consent. The Renters (Reform) Act has strengthened tenants' right to request EV charger installation, but consent is still needed. Portable EVSE cables that connect to a Commando (16A or 32A) socket are a practical workaround where a fixed wallbox is not possible.

Smart features worth having

A good smart wallbox shows you energy used per session, lets you schedule charging remotely and can export data to your car's app. Some models support vehicle-to-home (V2H) if your car supports it — useful as battery storage for solar. Look for OZEV grant eligibility and OCPP compatibility for future-proofing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for a home EV charger?
Not usually. Home EV chargers in England, Scotland and Wales fall under permitted development rights as long as the charger is less than 0.2 cubic metres in volume and not on a listed building or in a conservation area.
How long does it take to charge an EV at home?
On a 7 kW wallbox, most EVs with a 60–80 kWh battery take 8–12 hours for a full charge. Most drivers top up overnight rather than charging from empty every day.
Can I use a 3-pin plug to charge an EV?
Yes, but it is slow — typically 2.3–3 kW, adding around 8–10 miles of range per hour. It is fine for occasional use but not practical as a daily charging method for larger EVs.
