Workplace EV charging: the Workplace Charging Scheme explained
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is administered by OZEV and provides a voucher worth up to £350 per socket, capped at 40 sockets per applicant. It applies to businesses, charities, small accommodation providers and public authorities — not to individual homeowners (who use a separate Renters and Homeowners scheme for domestic chargers).
How to apply
The employer applies online through the OZEV portal before installation begins. Once approved, an OZEV-registered installer fits the charger and deducts the grant from the invoice. There is no rebate route — the installer receives the grant directly. Installation must be completed within 180 days of the voucher being issued.
What qualifies
The charger must be a smart charge point capable of scheduling and data logging. It must be located on dedicated off-street parking associated with the applicant's premises. For accommodation providers, at least one of the bays must be an EV charging bay available to guests.
Employee benefit-in-kind
Where an employer provides free EV charging at work to employees, there is no benefit-in-kind tax charge as long as the facility is available to all employees. This makes employer-provided workplace charging a genuinely valuable perk — and a factor worth checking when comparing job offers.
