Market
Battery-electric vehicles accounted for 27.7% of European Union new-car registrations in August 2026, with 196,486 units sold — a 62.7% year-on-year increase, according to ACEA. In the first eight months of 2026, 1,641,333 battery-electric cars were registered in the EU, a cumulative share of 21.7%, up from 15.8% a year earlier. The EU car market grew 5.3% year-to-date through August. Plug-in hybrids captured 11.1% of August registrations with 78,426 units, up 10.8% year-on-year. Together, battery-electric and plug-in hybrid cars represented nearly 39% of all new EU registrations in August — a level approaching parity with conventional petrol cars in several major markets.
Regional divergence
Country-level divergence remained pronounced in August. Germany registered 68,930 battery-electric cars — a 75.1% year-on-year rise — while France recorded 36,159 new battery-electric cars (+112.8%) and Denmark reached 13,887 (+54.6%). Italy's battery-electric share remained subdued after government incentives expired in June 2026. In the United States, 86,186 battery-electric vehicles were sold in August — down 39.6% year-on-year — with total plug-in vehicles reaching 106,289 units and capturing 7.70% of light-duty sales. China's new-energy vehicle wholesale sales reached 1,643,000 units in August — up 17.8% year-on-year — with NEVs capturing a record 60.6% of total Chinese car sales for the second consecutive month, according to CAAM.
Global leaders & brands
BYD recorded 440,293 total new-energy vehicle wholesale sales in August 2026 — up 17.84% year-on-year and its highest monthly total of the year. Passenger battery-electric deliveries reached a new monthly record of 256,230 units, up 28.38% year-on-year. BYD's overseas shipments rose to a record 189,466 units — up 134.4% year-on-year — the company's fifth consecutive monthly overseas record, accounting for 43% of total deliveries. BYD raised its 2026 overseas sales target again and set a goal of more than 2.5 million international units in 2027, reflecting the continued offset of falling domestic Chinese demand. Tesla's Q3 2026 delivery results are expected on 2 October; analyst consensus forecasts approximately 462,000 deliveries, about 3.8% below the Q2 2026 record of 480,126 units.
Charging & infrastructure
EU27 public recharging infrastructure reached 1,159,838 charge points in August 2026, a 13.6% increase year-on-year, according to EAFO. From January 2026 all new public AC chargers must comply with ISO 15118 parts 1–5, enabling plug-and-charge and transparent pricing; from January 2027 ISO 15118-20 will apply to all new or refurbished chargers, public and private. Germany committed more than USD 584 million (approximately EUR 540 million) for EV charging infrastructure, targeting motorway corridors and high-density urban areas through 2030. The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation's enforcement requirements — transparent pricing and ad-hoc payment without pre-registration — are under active national supervision across EU member states.
Policy
August marked a third consecutive month in which the absence of the US federal EV tax credit — terminated in September 2025 — produced a near-40% year-on-year decline in American battery-electric sales. In Europe, supportive policy continued to drive demand: Germany's income-targeted programme, offering grants of up to EUR 6,000 for battery-electric buyers, contributed to the 75% rise in German BEV registrations, and France's 'Prime coup de pouce' supported a 113% year-on-year surge in French battery-electric sales. BYD raised its 2026 overseas sales target and set a goal of more than 2.5 million international units in 2027, as falling domestic demand in China accelerated international expansion. The EU's minimum-price mechanism for Chinese-made EVs, replacing earlier tariffs of 7.8%–35.3%, continued to shape cross-border trade flows.
