Market
Battery-electric vehicles accounted for 25.7% of new-car registrations across 16 major European markets in July 2026, with 224,266 units sold — a 13.6% year-on-year increase, according to WardsAuto. Cumulative EU battery-electric registrations for the year to date through July reached approximately 1.44 million units, lifting the estimated half-year-plus share to around 21%. The overall EU car market grew roughly 4% year-on-year in July. Plug-in hybrids continued their recovery, holding near 10% of EU registrations year-to-date. Combined, fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars now represent roughly 31% of all new EU registrations through July 2026.
Regional divergence
Country-level divergence widened further in July 2026. Denmark led all major European markets with an 80.1% battery-electric share, followed by France at 35.0% and Germany at 29.3%. Italy fell sharply to 5.9% after its government EV incentive scheme expired in June. In China, new-energy vehicle sales reached 1,561,000 units in July — up 23.7% year-on-year — and NEVs captured 60.4% of total Chinese car sales, exceeding 60% for the first time, according to CAAM data. In the United States, battery-electric sales totalled 73,443 units in July, down 41.5% year-on-year, leaving all plug-in vehicles at 6.8% of the market.
Global leaders & brands
BYD recorded 419,211 new-energy vehicle wholesale sales in July 2026 — up 21.76% year-on-year — its third consecutive month of growth. Of those, 233,105 were pure battery-electric vehicles, a 31% year-on-year increase. BYD's overseas shipments reached a record 179,841 units in July, surging 124.3% year-on-year and accounting for 43% of monthly total deliveries, as international expansion continued to offset declining domestic sales. The top-selling battery-electric models in Europe in July were the Skoda Elroq, Volkswagen ID.4 and Renault 5. Tesla's Q2 2026 deliveries of 480,126 vehicles (+25% year-on-year) remained the latest confirmed quarterly benchmark; July model-level data was not yet published.
Charging & infrastructure
Preliminary data from the European Alternative Fuels Observatory released in August 2026 showed public recharging infrastructure across EU27 reaching 1,157,551 charge points. The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation continued to take hold as national regulators across member states tested enforcement of requirements for ad-hoc payment without pre-registration and transparent price display before charging starts. Germany's amended Buildings Electromobility Infrastructure Act, published in July 2026 and taking effect January 2027, replaces the fixed one-charger-per-ten-spaces rule with a capacity-based formula (total spaces × 1.1 kW), aligning commercial building charging provision with actual fleet demand.
Policy
The US federal EV tax credit — which ended in September 2025 — continued to suppress American EV demand, with battery-electric sales down 41.5% year-on-year in July and total plug-in vehicle sales off 37.6%. China's NEV exports reached 553,000 units in July, up 150% year-on-year, as Chinese manufacturers accelerated shipments to Europe, South-East Asia and Latin America. The EU's minimum-price mechanism for Chinese-made EVs, introduced to replace punitive tariffs of 7.8%–35.3%, continued to shape import flows throughout the month. In Europe, Germany's income-targeted programme — offering grants of up to €6,000 for battery-electric buyers — was expected to open a second application tranche in August 2026.
