Market

Battery-electric vehicles accounted for 20.7% of European Union new-car registrations in January–June 2026, with 1,220,890 units sold in the first half — a share up from 15.6% a year earlier, according to ACEA. It is the first time the EU's full half-year battery-electric share has exceeded 20%. In June alone, 270,557 battery-electric cars were registered, a year-on-year gain of 60.7%. The EU car market grew 5.7% in H1 2026. Plug-in hybrids captured 9.8% of the EU half-year market, up from 8.3%, while hybrids remained the most popular powertrain at 37.3%. Together, fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars now account for roughly 30% of all EU new registrations.

Regional divergence

The divergence between Europe and North America widened sharply in June. EU battery-electric registrations rose 60.7% year-on-year to 270,557 units, led by Germany (+78%), France (+94%) and Italy (+87%), with Belgium setting a monthly record of 17,280 registrations. In North America, EV sales fell 20% year-to-date in H1 2026 following the end of the US federal EV tax credit in September 2025. Globally, EV sales reached 2.0 million in June — up 7% year-on-year — buoyed by a 27% European year-to-date rise. China recorded a new NEV export milestone in June: 523,000 vehicles were shipped abroad, the first time NEVs exceeded half of the country's total vehicle exports.

Global leaders & brands

BYD retook the global battery-electric passenger-vehicle lead in Q2 2026, delivering 557,090 BEVs against Tesla's 480,126 — a gap of approximately 77,000 units. Tesla's Q2 was its best-ever second quarter, up 25% year-on-year, driven by an estimated 40% rise in European deliveries that offset weakness in the United States and China. BYD's June overseas shipments set a fresh record at 175,349 units — up nearly 95% year-on-year — and accounted for 43.5% of its monthly total, as expanding international volumes continued to offset declining domestic sales in China.

Charging & infrastructure

A Transport & Environment analysis published in July 2026 concluded that public charging infrastructure has outpaced EV sales in all EU member states except one, with the ratio of public charge points per battery-electric vehicle improving across the bloc. The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation continued to take hold: all new public AC chargers in Europe must now comply with ISO 15118 (parts 1–5), enabling plug-and-charge and transparent pricing. The European Union is advancing a requirement for EV charging points every 60 kilometres along the core motorway network. EU electric truck registrations rose 47% in H1 2026, though a significant gap remains in heavy-duty charging infrastructure.

Policy

The transatlantic policy gap continued to shape demand in June. In North America, the absence of the US federal EV tax credit — which ended in September 2025 — kept year-to-date EV sales 20% below 2025 levels. In Europe, supportive incentives drove record results: France's 'Prime coup de pouce' contributed to a 94% year-on-year surge in French battery-electric sales in June, Belgium set a new monthly registration record of 17,280 units, and Denmark reached an 80% half-year battery-electric market share. Germany's income-targeted programme neared launch, with grants of up to €6,000 for battery-electric cars available to qualifying households.
