EU Battery-Electric Share Rises to 20.7% in H1 2026 as Registrations Climb 40% to 1.22 Million

Battery-electric vehicles captured 20.7% of EU new-car registrations in the first half of 2026, up from 15.6% in H1 2025, with 1,220,890 units registered — a 40.5% year-on-year increase — as June alone delivered 270,557 BEVs, up 60.7%, according to ACEA data published on 23 July.
The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) reported on 23 July 2026 that battery-electric vehicles captured 20.7% of EU new-car registrations in the first half of 2026, up from 15.6% in the same period of 2025. A total of 1,220,890 new electric cars were registered across the European Union in the first six months of the year — an increase of 40.5% year-on-year. The milestone means roughly one in five newly registered passenger cars in the EU is now fully electric, the first time the segment has held a 20% or greater share on a cumulative half-year basis.
June contributed significantly to the H1 total: 270,557 battery-electric passenger cars were registered during the month, up 60.7% compared with June 2025 and a new monthly record. Germany remained the largest individual market with 84,057 BEV registrations in June, up 78.2% year-on-year. France recorded 55,851 BEV registrations in June, a 93.5% increase. For the full first half, France led growth among the big four markets at 62.9%, followed by Germany at 48%. Belgium posted a more moderate increase of 8.2%. The overall EU car market grew 5.7% in the first half of 2026. Hybrid-electric vehicles retained the most popular powertrain position at 37.3% of registrations.
