EU Battery-Electric Share Climbs to 27.7% in August 2026, Up 62.7% Year-on-Year

Battery-electric vehicles captured 27.7% of EU new-car registrations in August 2026, with 196,486 units registered out of 708,211 new cars — a 62.7% year-on-year increase from 120,797 in August 2025 — as France grew 74.2% and Germany 53.1%, lifting the year-to-date EU BEV share to 21.7% on 1,641,333 units, according to ACEA data published on 24 September 2026.

Battery-electric vehicles captured 27.7% of EU new-car registrations in August 2026, according to data published by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association on 24 September. A total of 196,486 BEVs were registered out of 708,211 new passenger cars during the month — a 62.7% year-on-year increase from 120,797 units in August 2025.

Plug-in hybrids contributed a further 78,426 registrations, up 10.8% year-on-year, bringing vehicles with an external charging option to a combined 38.9% of August registrations. Hybrid-electric cars retained the single largest powertrain share at 36.6%.

Among the largest EU markets, France led BEV growth with a 74.2% year-on-year increase. Germany followed with a 53.1% rise, and Denmark recorded 40.9% growth. Petrol registrations fell sharply across the bloc: down 18.6% overall, with Germany dropping 21.9%, France 35.8%, Spain 18.5% and Italy 16.7%.

Year-to-date through August 2026, the EU registered 1,641,333 new battery-electric passenger cars, giving BEVs a 21.7% share of the market for the first eight months of the year — up from 15.8% in the same period of 2025. The August monthly figure of 27.7% is the highest monthly BEV share recorded in the EU and takes the 2026 trajectory well ahead of the 20.7% BEV share recorded for the first half of 2026.
