IEA: global EV sales surged 35% in Q2 2026, forecast raised to 29% market share

Electric car sales jumped 35% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, with records broken in 50 countries. The IEA has raised its full-year forecast to 29% of all car sales worldwide.

The International Energy Agency has revised its electric car forecast upward following a strong second quarter. Global EV sales jumped 35% year-on-year in Q2 2026, with sales records broken in 50 countries. More than 90 countries recorded growth in the first half of the year.

The strong H1 performance prompted the IEA to raise its full-year forecast: electric cars are now expected to account for 29% of all car sales worldwide in 2026, up one percentage point from the 28% projected in the agency's Global EV Outlook published in May.

Growth was underpinned by new and continued policy support across Europe, Latin America and Southeast Asia. Australia, Brazil, India, Korea and Vietnam were among the standout performers, with sales between March and June roughly double those of the same period in 2025.

The upward revision comes despite ongoing challenges in the US market, where the removal of federal EV tax credits in September 2025 has weighed on sales. US EV sales fell 21% in Q2 2026.
