Electric cars captured a record 98.7% of all new passenger car registrations in Norway in August 2026, with 13,451 vehicles registered and just 139 non-electric cars sold; the Volkswagen ID.4 led the market while XPeng and BYD together more than doubled their share to 11.4%.
Electric cars claimed a new all-time monthly record of 98.7% of passenger car registrations in Norway in August 2026, according to data reported by electrive and InsideEVs on 1 September. A total of 13,451 new passenger cars were registered during the month — a 3.4% decrease in total volume year-on-year — yet the share of battery-electric vehicles rose sharply from 96.9% recorded in August 2025 to the new all-time peak.
Just 139 vehicles with any combustion content were registered across all categories: 30 petrol cars, 64 diesel cars, 31 conventional hybrids and 45 plug-in hybrids. The remaining 13,312 registrations were battery-electric.
The Volkswagen ID.4 was Norway's best-selling individual model in August, extending a run of steady demand for the mid-size electric crossover. Tesla did not crack the top five: the Model 3 placed seventh. The standout movers were Chinese brands: XPeng and BYD together more than doubled their combined market share year-on-year, rising from 4.9% in August 2025 to 11.4% in August 2026. Toyota and BMW also recorded significant growth compared with the same month last year.
For the year-to-date period through August 2026, battery-electric cars account for 97.8% of all new passenger car registrations in Norway — confirming the country's near-complete transition to electric mobility. Norway's performance reflects decades of consistent policy support: purchase-tax exemptions, toll-road and ferry privileges, and a dense public fast-charging network have made it the world's most advanced market for battery-electric vehicles.
