Battery-electric vehicles captured 25.7% of new-car registrations across 16 major European markets in July 2026, with 224,266 units registered — up 13.6% year-on-year — as France reached a 35% BEV share and Germany hit 29.3%, lifting cumulative European BEV registrations to roughly 1.5 million through July, approximately 30% ahead of the same period in 2025.
Battery-electric vehicles accounted for 25.7% of new-car registrations across 16 major European markets in July 2026, reaching 224,266 units — a 13.6% year-on-year increase — according to data reported by Reuters. The result means more than one in four newly registered cars in Europe was fully electric, continuing a run of months in which the BEV share has held above 20%.
France and Germany drove the headline performance. France recorded 44,378 BEV registrations in July, representing a 35% market share — a new monthly high for Europe's second-largest car market. Germany followed with 78,609 units and a 29.3% share, the strongest BEV penetration in Europe's largest market since the income-targeted subsidy programme opened for applications earlier in 2026. Nordic and Benelux countries maintained the highest national shares, led by Denmark at 80.2%, Finland at 52.6%, the Netherlands at 47.3%, Belgium at 42.8% and Sweden at 42.6%.
Through July 2026, cumulative BEV registrations across Europe reached approximately 1.5 million units — around 30% above the same period in 2025, signalling that the acceleration recorded in the first half is being sustained. Italy remained an outlier: its BEV share fell back to 5.9% following the expiry of government incentives.
