Toyota Cancels Lexus LF-ZC Electric Sedan, Shifting Focus to SUVs
· EVTrader EV News
Toyota has ended development of the Lexus LF-ZC electric sedan, abandoning a flagship EV first shown in 2023 that was to feature gigacasting and new long-range battery technology.
Toyota has scrapped plans to launch the Lexus LF-ZC, a next-generation electric sedan unveiled as a concept at the Japan Mobility Show in 2023 and positioned as one of the marque's most important future models. A Toyota spokesperson cited "fluctuations in market demand and the workload associated with vehicle planning and manufacturing," with Lexus opting to concentrate resources on high-riding crossovers and SUVs where consumer demand is stronger. The LF-ZC was originally scheduled to enter production in 2026, with Toyota later revising that target to mid-2027 before ultimately halting the programme. The cancelled model was to debut several breakthrough technologies: gigacasting that would split the body into front, centre and rear sections to lower manufacturing costs; new high-performance prismatic batteries expected to deliver roughly twice the driving range of current EVs; and a dedicated battery-electric architecture. The cancellation is a significant setback for Toyota's EV roadmap and comes as rivals such as BMW ramp up next-generation electric models. Analysts note that waning US EV demand, combined with the operational complexity of developing an entirely new vehicle architecture, played a key role in the decision.
