Volkswagen Group Begins Series Production of New MEBeco Electric Drive in Hungary

· EVTrader EV News

Audi Hungaria launched series production of VW Group's next-generation MEBeco electric motor on 18 June 2026 at its Győr plant, backed by €350 million in investment; the unit will power the Cupra Raval, VW ID. Polo, ID. Cross and Skoda Epiq.

Audi Hungaria officially began series production of the MEBeco (APP290) electric drive system on 18 June 2026 at its plant in Győr, Hungary. The MEBeco is Volkswagen Group's next-generation electric motor developed for the MEB+ platform, which underpins the automaker's upcoming family of small electric cars. The Győr plant has invested €350 million in preparing for this drivetrain since 2022. Unlike earlier projects at the site, Audi Hungaria is now manufacturing not only complete drive units but also key sub-components in-house: the plate pack, rotor, power electronics and associated software, with integrated testing conducted on site. The first production vehicle to use the MEBeco will be the Cupra Raval, assembled at the SEAT plant in Martorell, Spain. The drivetrain will also go into the Volkswagen ID. Polo and its GTI variant, the VW ID. Cross crossover-SUV, and the Skoda Epiq. Production at Győr will scale from an initial single shift to three shifts as demand ramps across VW Group's MEB+ small-EV lineup.
