Volkswagen Reveals ID. ERA 5X, First All-Electric Model on New CMP Platform Built With XPeng

SAIC Volkswagen has filed the ID. ERA 5X with Chinese regulators, revealing the first battery-electric model in the ID. ERA series. Built on the CMP platform co-developed with XPeng, the five-seat SUV uses a 155 kW motor and a CATL LFP battery pack.

SAIC Volkswagen filed the ID. ERA 5X electric SUV with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on 7 August 2026, revealing the first battery-electric model in the ID. ERA series. Volkswagen followed the regulatory filing with official images of the production-spec exterior.

The ID. ERA 5X is a mid-size SUV measuring 4,560 mm in length with a 2,815 mm wheelbase and a five-seat layout. A 155 kW electric motor sourced from United Automotive Electronic Systems drives the front axle, drawing power from a lithium iron phosphate battery manufactured by CATL. Top speed is rated at 175 km/h. Battery capacity and CLTC range were not disclosed in the filing.

The model marks a significant step for Volkswagen in China: the ID. ERA 5X is the first Volkswagen production model globally to be built on the CMP (China Main Platform) paired with the CEA (China Electronic Architecture), both co-developed with XPeng. The partnership gives the ID. ERA range access to software and electronic capabilities from one of China's leading smart-EV specialists.

The ID. ERA 5X is the first fully electric model in a family that so far comprises extended-range and plug-in hybrid variants. It is targeted exclusively at the Chinese market.

Kia unveiled the PV7 at IAA Transportation in Hanover on 14 September 2026, its second all-electric Platform Beyond Vehicle van alongside the PV5: a 5,350 mm long model with 800-volt architecture, 71.5 or 96.2 kWh battery options, up to 460 km of WLTP range in the Cargo variant with the larger pack, a 25-minute charge from 10 to 80 per cent at 350 kW, and a 200 kW front motor; a passenger variant seats up to nine in European specification and European sales start in the second half of 2027.

Tesla publishes European specs for the Semi: 550 km at 40 tonnes, 800 kW charging

Days before IAA Transportation in Hanover, Tesla put the European specification of the Semi on its national websites: one Standard Range tractor, up to 550 km of range at 40 tonnes gross combination weight, 1.0 kWh/km, three rear-axle motors good for 800 kW, and Megacharger charging at up to 800 kW that returns about 60% of range in half an hour. Deliveries from 2027. No price, no order button — and, as our own calculation shows, one mandatory 45-minute break is enough to finish a full nine-hour driving day.
