New York City's Department of Transportation has selected Brooklyn-based startup it's electric to deploy nearly 700 electric-vehicle charging plugs at kerbside locations across all five boroughs over three years, replacing the city's existing 88-plug pilot and adding approximately 600 new on-street charging points.
New York City's Department of Transportation selected Brooklyn-based startup it's electric to deploy nearly 700 electric-vehicle charging plugs at kerbside locations across all five boroughs, the city announced on 15 September 2026.
The contract covers a three-year deployment programme. It's electric will replace the city's existing kerbside charging pilot — which operates 88 plugs at a small number of locations — and add approximately 600 new on-street charge points. The expanded network will span Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.
Kerbside EV charging targets a challenge specific to dense urban areas: a large share of New York City residents live in multi-family buildings without access to private parking or home charging equipment. On-street plugs allow those residents to charge while parked in locations they already use, without requiring a dedicated trip to a public fast-charging station.
It's electric was founded in New York and has developed proprietary charging hardware designed for kerbside installation on street lamp posts and utility poles. The city cited the startup's experience deploying in dense urban environments as a key factor in its selection.
NYC's kerbside programme follows similar urban charging initiatives in London, Paris and Amsterdam, which have each built out thousands of on-street charge points over recent years to serve residents without access to driveways or private parking.
